Frank Gambale - Passages

 Jazz Fusion

"I've been following Frank Gambale for years way back to the Chick Corea Elecrtik band days. This guy can simply do it all, from beautiful acoustic work, to power rock, to the best fusion guitar work on the planet.I just recently have picked up several of his solo projects and they all are quite good. Passages has some great tunes on it and for a four piece band it sounds pretty full. The title track Passages is one of the greatest slow blues guitar tracks of all time filled with power and passion. I highly reccomend it." David G."

Victor Bailey - Low Blow

 Jazz Fusion

Remember way back in 1981, when skinny, Berklee-trained chopsmeister Victor Bailey took on the unenviable task of following the mighty Jaco Pastorius into Weather Report? The Philly-born musician - deeply influenced by Jaco, Stanley Clarke, and funk master Larry Graham - duly played like a mofo rising. Too bad Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul shifted into cruise control for the fusion band's final four records.

John Scofield - A Go Go

 Jazz Fusion

John Scofield's stature as a modern jazz master on electric guitar puts him in a sweet spot for this simmering, sexy collaboration with acid jazz pathfinders Medeski, Martin and Wood, Scofield's taut and spicy lines striking sparks against the soulful grooves pitched by drummer Billy Martin, keyboard colorist John Medeski, and bassist Chris Wood. Far from a cheap commercial shot, the leader's plunge into this reheated '60s style is appropriately redolent of its funk heritage and his own astringent command of sharp lyrical and smart harmonic asides.

Tracklist:
1. A Go Go
2. Chank
3. Boozer
4. Southern Pacific
5. Jeep On 35
6. Kubrick
7. Green Tea

Pat Metheny - Trio 99 ? 00

 Jazz Fusion

Think "Pat Metheny trio record" and you'll probably recall his groundbreaking Bright Size Life or the more abstract Rejoicing (with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins) or even Question and Answer (Dave Holland, Roy Haynes). Well, keep thinking. Trio 99-00 is the popular guitarist-composer's most straight-ahead, no-muss, no-fuss recording yet. Recorded over two days with the remarkable team of drummer Bill Stewart and bassist Larry Grenadier, Trio 99-00 covers much compositional and stylistic ground but is essentially a hard-bop-tinged blowing session. Metheny's Sonny Rollins-ish originals include "(Go) Get It," "Soul Cowboy" (featuring amazing chordal guitar), "What Do You Want?" and a blazing trio variation on "Lone Jack," which appeared on the first Pat Metheny Group album. Unusual choices are made throughout: a sensually swinging "Giant Steps," an elegant "A Lot of Livin' to Do," and inclusion of Wayne Shorter's queasy gem, "Capricorn." And as always, Pat can't help but get sentimental on acoustic guitar, culminating in the first studio rendition of "Travels." This isn't for the faint-hearted, nor those waiting for another PMG travelogue like We Live Here or Letter from Home. This is pure jazz slam, a trio showdown with the gloves off.

Tracklist:
1. (Go) Get It
2. Giant Steps
3. Just Like The Day
4. Soul Cowboy
5. The Sun In Montreal
6. Capricorn
7. We Had A Sister
8. What Do You Want?
9. A Lot Of Livin' To Do
10. Lone Jack
11. Travels

John Abercrombie

 Jazz Fusion

"The trio heard on this CD (guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Jack DeJohnette) recorded Gateway and Gateway 2 for ECM back in 1975 and 1977. Although each of the musicians have grown musically since that time and have piled up plenty of accomplishments, the style of music that they perform when they come together as Gateway has remained largely unchanged. One could call it "creative fusion" or "post bop"; whatever the name, the music's success depends on a great deal of intuitive interplay between the talented players. John Abercrombie's often-distorted tone and use of color show hints of Bill Frisell (who must have learned from the example of the older guitarist). Dave Holland's bass is never predictable nor subservient to Abercrombie, and, even if the other musicians were allowed to coast, Jack DeJohnette's constantly rumbling drumming would keep the performers from ever getting too comfortable. Although the original music (which concludes with a quiet piece for DeJohnette's piano) is not for all jazz fans (Abercrombie's rockish sound may scare some off), the high improvisational level makes this a set deserving of close listens." Scott Yanow

Tracklist:
1. Homecoming
2. Waltz New
3. Modern Times
4. Calypso Falto
5. Short Cut
6. How's Never

Mateus Starling - Kairos

 Jazz Fusion

Hello friends and fellow music lovers. I received an email from a fan of the blog a week or so ago, a fine young gentleman and guitarist asking me to review his new cd. He sent it to me via post and i received it yesterday.
I was literally blown away by this guy, amazing compositions and masterful playing, a true jazz fusion product. He is joined by fine tenor sax player as they play effortlessly thru a myriad of chord changes with extreme precision. They are both joined by a well structured rhythm section that brings it together with beautiful melodic songs. This band ROCKS!
Have a listen to this band and tell me if you don't agree that this fine young up-start is well on his way to making more music magic in the future.
Click his link below and check out his myspace where you will find video's of him playing with another one of my favorite guitar fusion bands "Bret's Fret's.

Guitar Speak - Vol.1

 Jazz Fusion

In 1988, the IRS No Speak label began releasing albums in the "Guitar Speak" trilogy. In this project, various guitarists were called upon to provide new material for compilation releases. The guitarists surveyed in this series generally came from diverse musical backgrounds -- making objective reviewing even more difficult than usual, but also making the listening process quite rewarding for the open-minded.

It almost goes without saying that an album of this sort would probably appeal primarily to "professionals" of the guitar craft. Not being such a professional myself, I hasten to point out that this review is intended to judge the final musical product at least as much as "the technical prowess" of the guitarist in question. Matters of speed, precision, and range are very important things. But they aren't the only important things.

Tracklist:
1. No Limit - Alvin Lee
2. Prisoner - Randy California
3. Western Flyer - Angelic Voices of Faith, Eric Johnson
4. Let Me Out ?A Here - Leslie West
5. Blood Alley 152 - Ronnie Montrose

8. Slow Moon Rising - Rick Derringer
9. Danjo - Peter Haycock

Tim Miller - Trio

 Jazz Fusion

Tim Miller?s third indie effort stands out by manifesting his influences as an aural whole. Compositionally, the freedom and openness in the music reflects the deep influence of Keith Jarrett, while sonically, the air-infused yet electric guitar sound dances with bass and drums mixed in a pastoral acoustic style. Even with headphones, the listener hears the trio of instruments entwined in the air, coupled by intense playing and musicianship.

From the perspective of guitar-related influences we hear the chordal inspiration of a fellow Bostonian, voicing-god Mick Goodrick. Linearity is Miller?s calling card, seamlessly melding Allan Holdsworth?s 21st Century legato technique with a non-guitar-centric, truly jazz vocabulary and phraseology, with notes percussing from the fretboard in pianistic fashion.

Tracklist:
1 Intro
2. Untied
3. Shift
4. Paris
5. Sparkle
6. Straight Lines
7. The Trees, The Sun

John Mclaughlin - This Is Jazz 17

 Jazz Fusion

I recommend this cd to anyone not familiar with mclaughlin's works. It encompasses everything from his early stuff with the revolutionary electric band, mahavishnu orchestra to his more quiet, layed back acoustic stuff. He tears it up with santana as they trade intense distorted licks on john coltrane's "love surpreme." Mclaughlin gets really interesting and worth hearing sounds from his guitar on "do you hear the voices left behind". He makes evident his scalar approach as he improvs over this bepop-sounding tune.

Tracklist:
1. Birds Of Fire
2. Lotus Feet
3. A Love Supreme
4. Do You Hear The Voices That You Left Behind?
5. Guardian Angel
6. The Dark Prince
7. Aspan

Pat Martino - Live at Yoshi's

 Jazz Fusion

That Pat Martino's new Live at Yoshi's is a stunning display of jazz-guitar prowess should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the six-string legend. That the disc is one of those lucky live albums that captures a night when everything seemed to be falling into place for Martino and his trio of organist Joey DeFrancesco and drummer Billy Hart is perhaps more than even the guitarist's most ardent admirers could have hoped for.

Stanley Clarke

 Jazz Fusion

In most cases Stanley Clarke is known for his electric funky
jazz-rock bass playing but on "This Is Jazz" Stan's artsier and jazzier side is emphasized. Some cuts employ some very late
80's "smooth" jazz synthesizers but as heard on "What If I Forgot The Champange" and an odd cover on Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" the arrangements are a little obvious.Only the final cut,an imaginative live version of "All Blues" boes Clarke's jazz side come to full fruitation. Most people will be more satisfied with Stnaley's first four solo albums circa.1973 to 1976 but this is an interesting,if not essencial anthology.

Tracklist:
1. Goodbye Pork Pie Hat
2. Desert Song
3. Quiet Afternoon (Live)
4. Song To John (Part I)
5. Song To John (Part II)
6. Christmas In Rio
7. Spanish Phases For Strings And Bass

Chris Potter - Travelling Mercies

 Jazz Fusion

This album, along with Brad Mehldau's "Largo," represents an exciting new direction in jazz; one of dramatically increased diversity in many different dimensions- harmonically, rhythmically, sonically...all of the traditional parameters are pushed a great deal farther than they have been in the past. The music is a successful combination of a wide variety of sounds and styles, staying true to "real" jazz with its complex harmony and improvisation, while incorporating new electronic samples and more aggressive grooves. Some tracks are more traditional than others, but all are great creations. This is some of the most exciting, cutting-edge jazz available today.

Tracklist:
1. Megalopolis
2. Snake Oil
3. Invisible Man
4. Washed Ashore
5. Children Go
6. Any Moment Now
7. Migrations
